Village of Lövő

Stretching on 17,52 km² and inhabited by 1463 people, the village of Lövő is situated on the north-west part of Hungary bordered by Sopronkövesd, Völcsej, Nemeskér and Röjtökmuzsaj. The village has a moderate climate, fresh air; and it lies adjacent to the region’s largest intact forest rich famous for its big games. The oldest edifice in Lövő’s history is a small hill standing in the north-west part of the settlement, referred to as “Várhely” that once served as the Celts’ lookout post. This small fortification was later owned by the Romans and finally taken over by Avars and Hungarians when they named the place “Lövő”.

During the 13^th and 14^th century, the settlement was owned by a noble family; the period of time when quite a few German settlers came. In the second half of the 15^th century, for a brief period of time, Lövő was a market town but the Ottoman rule put an end to this privilege. On their way to Vienna, the Turks destroyed the village almost completely and whatever remained was burnt by the French in 1683. The villagers scattered; most of them moved to the nearby Nagylózs. During those times Lövő was in the ownership of the Archbishop of Esztergom György Széchenyi, who issued a charter in 1691, in which he entices serfs and settlers to the village by promising that they would not have to do duty labour but would be allowed to buy off these duties. The end of the 17^th century saw the immigration of Croats and some members of the lower nobility (referred to as ‘taxists’ as they could pay off their debts in a lump sum annually) and, after an outbreak of the plague in 1711, another wave of German settlers arrived in Lövő, mostly tradesmen. The decaying church was rebuilt in 1720 and in 1862 Count Pál Széchenyi sold his lands to the locals.

On the railway line opening in 1865 between Sopron and Szombathely, Lövő was chosen as a station. In 1924, the predecessor of the local knife factory was established but the plant was looted and demolished by the Germans in 1945. The knife factory, nationalised in 1949, was attached to the Sopron branch of the Elzett Company and, in the late 1990s, it went into the ownership of the German Roto firm. Presently, Roto Elzett Certa provides a job for 700 people living in Sopron and its vicinity.

The settlement currently has over 200 entrepreneurs or SMEs. In 1921, a local nursery and girls’ school was founded and it was run by the Sisters of Charity until the school was nationalised. The village was developing briskly, in 1888 a pharmacy, in 1930 a slaughterhouse and in 1936 a lido was established. Lövő now has a full supply of public utilities. It has a kindergarten and a primary school (functioning as a combined institution); there are 200 pupils at the school and over 50 children at the kindergarten. As far as public institutions and other services are concerned, Lövő is in a highly favourable position in comparison with the neighbouring villages: it has a library, a GP, a dentist, a health visitor a police station, a pharmacy, an ambulance unit, and a veterinarian’s office. There is also a broad range of catering and commercial facilities available. The Cultural and Service Centre, working as a venue for high-standard events, opened to the public in 2006 and has a large number of regional and cross-border activities. The Centre is also home to several regional organisations including the Family and Child Welfare Service, the local representation of the Labour Office and the office of the Lower Alps
micro-region.
